Orthognathic Surgery

Providing a Solution for Severe Jaw Misalignment

Orthognathic surgery is a corrective jaw procedure that may be indicated for patients who suffer from severe jaw malocclusion (misalignment). Conventional braces successfully move teeth into their proper position, but cannot move jaws.

If malocclusion is a result of a skeletal issue, orthodontic surgery may be recommended. Dr. Knight works in partnership with an oral and maxillofacial specialist (OMS) to provide a surgical solution for qualifying patients in his Louisville, KY, and Radcliff, KY locations.

When Is Orthognathic Surgery Necessary?

Corrective jaw surgery is indicated when there is a skeletal issue due to the structure of the bones and is recommended when a patient’s malocclusion cannot be corrected with conventional braces alone. Because orthodontic surgery is recommended when jaw growth is complete, it is typically performed in adults.

On average, a male patient is finished growing by the age of eighteen, and a female patient is finished growing by the age of sixteen. When the upper and lower jaw do not fit together properly, there can be a significant negative impact on health, function, and quality of life. Some indications you may need orthodontic surgery include:

  • Difficulty chewing, eating, or swallowing
  • Severe malocclusions, such as an overbite, underbite, open bite, or crossbite
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Difficulty speaking
  • A protruding or receding jaw
  • Difficulty touching your lips together

During your free consultation, Dr. Knight will perform an oral examination to determine the overall health of your teeth, bones, muscles, and gums. Your occlusion, or the way your bite fits together, will be closely evaluated, and your concerns about teeth alignment will be addressed. Diagnostic x-rays, scans, and photos will be taken to fully assess your orthodontic needs, and to help determine the most appropriate treatment plan for you.

Modern dental technology has tremendously advanced the field of orthodontics and provides the ability to deliver time-efficient and conservative treatment to our patients. Dr. Knight will thoroughly discuss your options with you and explain whether or not orthognathic surgery will be necessary for your treatment case. A fully customized and detailed plan will be created for your specific needs, outlining the treatment, approximate timeline, and fees.
